Side Story Games is the only review site that also includes information on a game's "mods". However, this category can be a lot more complex than what the surface shows. I've decided to clear up how we review the "mods" and some of the problems we occasionally encounter. After doing some research into one of the games that I was reviewing, I stumbled upon a list that has compiled nudity mods for a number of different games. This list included some of the games that we have already reviewed and passed off with lower mod ratings. So I thought I should clarify some of the problems we encounter with the “mods” section of each review. To date we are the only site that even includes a section on the mature content within game modifications. This is partially because most game reviews focus on the average console gamer (consoles almost entirely lack any sort of game modding tools) and partially because the very nature of user-generated content means that the number and type of mods changes extremely frequently. For those of you unfamiliar with what a “mod” is or what they are supposed to do, a mod is content that a user creates that can be applied to a particular game. This content can either change something that already exists within the game or add something extra. The most common type of mod are simple texture mods which change the visual appearance of objects within the game. However, some mods can change much of the way a game is played. The most complex mods, known as “overhauls”, completely revamp the way that a game works so that it’s almost an entirely different experience. When we find modding content it is usually based on a search of a select few well-known mod databases. These sites have a constant flow of traffic and have users that are dedicated enough to the game in question that a mod is always checked for safety and stability. As mods are user-created content, there is always a danger that something that might seem like a mod is actually a virus in disguise. Even those mods that are not viruses may be flawed in a way that breaks the game. Some of these sites are designed to efficiently showcase the entire selection of mods for a particular game and allow for both adult and “work-safe” content. However, many of the larger mod databases do not allow adult content. If your child is applying mods to their games, it is almost certain that they are going to one of these larger sites with strict enforcement of content. These sites have moderators that constantly watch the uploaded content to make sure they are in line with the site’s policies. As a result of these findings I’m working on updating the “Mods” sections of each of these games. Whenever we discover new content for these games, we’ll continue to update that section. However, when you read our reviews, specifically the “Mods” section, keep in mind two very basic rules:
Some of the games I found with nudity mods surprised even me. Mass Effect 2 was the biggest surprise. Either way, I’ll be updating the “Mods” section for the affected games.
