_ Dear Santa, I know I haven’t been perfect this year. I asked for the Balls of Steel Edition of Duke Nukem Forever for my birthday, and there’s very little that could possibly make up for that. I claimed it was because it’s the game that shouldn’t exist (and really, it still shouldn’t), but if you ignore that huge gaping hole in my near spotless gaming streak I think you’ll see that I should be on the “nice” list. So just in case I am, here’s what I really want for Christmas this year: NOTE: Most of the games on this list have not been officially reviewed for content. When appropriate, we have linked to reviews of previous or current games in the same series for comparison. _
_Let’s ignore the bugs for a second, because every game has bugs on release. Yes, Skyrim has more problems than most games but that’s because of the sheer amount of content within the game. It’s a huge open-world game where players can pick up missions at their whim. The characters and environments are beautifully designed and the storyline is unbelievably well written. There’s a reason this game is winning so many “Game of the Year” awards. To find out more, read our The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion review! _
_For those looking for a game that doesn’t involve violence, this is it. Portal 2 is perfect for kids as young as 8 to adults as old as 60+. The dark humor in this game will make older players laugh and the cooperative gameplay will encourage friends to work together to solve complex puzzles. It’s the kind of thing that requires people to get along long enough to solve a good puzzle while getting in a number of great laughs along the way. To find out more, read our Portal review! _
_I have played the multiplayer for both Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3. Anyone who knows me knows that I am not a fan of the Call of Duty series. It’s unbelievably repetitive and Activision consistently charges $60 for almost the exact same game as the previous entry in the series. That being said, Modern Warfare 3 has made some changes that I really like. I have fun playing Modern Warfare 3 online. If you’ve got a kid who really wants a shooter for Christmas, pick this one up instead of Battlefield 3. To find out more, read our Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 review! _
_If you’re over the age of 20, you’re going to remember some really good cop dramas. I’m talking about classics like Law & Order, Dragnet, Murder She Wrote, etc. L.A. Noire is the video game version of those cop dramas, but at an unbelievable level. The player will be asked to solve crimes from as simple as arson (assuming arson is simple) to as crazy as murders committed by a serial killer. This game makes players read characters facial expressions for “tells” and accuse characters of lying or holding back information. It’s crazy, but anyone who’s even remotely interested in detective mysteries should pick this one up. _
_If you’re over 21, you’re going to find this game hilarious and awesome all in the same moment. Saints Row: The Third takes an open-world city and allows the player to go crazy. Forget realism, this game throws realism out the window in a flurry of colorful explosions and purple marital aids. Missions will involve everything from “insurance fraud” where the player will throw himself at cars for money to missions where the player will have to drive while a tiger claws at him from the passenger seat. This game isn’t for kids, but it’s still awesome. _
_Superhero games have a spotted history, mainly because the majority of them come out as “movie games” (hint: nobody wants to play a watered-down version of the awesome movie they just watched). Batman: Arkham Asylum and now Batman: Arkham City tear that mold to shreds. You are the caped crusader, the Dark Knight, a shadow that walks. It’s hard to beat the ability to strike fear in the hearts of villains with your mere presence. Arkham City takes what was awesome from Arkham Asylum and puts it in a much larger landscape with even more supervillains. To find out more, read our Batman: Arkham Asylum review! _
_I love the Gears of War series. Unfortunately, Gears of War 3 has brought the series to a close. However, it’s worth it. This is an awesome game that also encourages cooperative gameplay. If you’ve got two people who really want to play an ultra-violent video game with bucketloads of blood, pick this one up. To find out more, read our Gears of War 3 review! _
_Those who know this series know that there’s nothing else like it. While the storyline in this game is a bit weak for my taste, the gameplay is still almost flawless. Those who loved Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood will definitely love this game. To find out more, read our Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood review!
