_ Now that the dust has officially settled, it’s about time that I discuss something that has long needed discussion. There is an epidemic amongst video game developers and it’s about time someone addressed it. So, like it or not, here’s what I have to say. _ Dear Video Game Developers,
I love Call of Duty. The first two games in the series were some of the best shooters I have ever played. They are well designed, perfectly balanced, and focus on telling a story that should be drilled into young people’s brains over and over again. The Nazis were evil, the Americans, British, and Soviets stopped them. It wasn’t always clean, it wasn’t always easy, but it got done. I love the Modern Warfare games as well. It’s awesome to be able to play that wartime action hero in a game that gives huge firefights and even bigger explosions. Who cares if rappelling off of the side of an exploding building is physically impossible (not to mention absurdly dangerous), it’s awesome and that’s all that matters. With that said, stop it. Just stop it. Now that we’re at Modern Warfare 3, it’s about time we realized that making “Call of Duty” and calling it “Homefront” or “Battlefield” is not going to cut it anymore. I haven’t played Battlefield 3 yet, so I’m not going to specifically rail on that one, but Homefront is my top offender right now. Do something different. If you try and make Call of Duty it’s going to be absurdly obvious that you’re trying to remake Call of Duty, and the areas where you fall short are going to be seen as even more awful because we know what you were trying to accomplish. How about you make something different so that, even if it does fail, we won’t be able to say “it failed because it’s not Call of Duty”. Give me an answer when someone asks “Why should I play [Game X] and not Call of Duty?” Want an example? How about Medal of Honor. No one who has played the game completely can say that it’s a Call of Duty wannabe. It’s not, it’s an entirely different experience. People might be able to debate whether or not it’s good or whether or not the experience is enjoyable, but it’s not a copycat, and for that I give it huge props. Want another? How about Brink. No one who has played this game can say that it’s a Call of Duty wannabe (hopefully that’s absurdly obvious from the beginning). It’s not even a Team Fortress 2 wannabe. It’s a different experience with different rules. It attempted something unique and, for that, I want to thank its developers. So next time I see “Mall of Snooty”, I’m going to do the same thing to its developers that I do with my cats. I’m going to hold their nose, put the game box in their face and say “NO” very loudly until they run and hide under the bed. Sincerely, Carmine
