The father of two sons is deathly ill and only a potion made from a special tree will save him. The two sons must work together to reach the tree and save their father. It is a perilous journey filled with danger, but with enough courage and tenacity they will see it through.
1. Gameplay
A great game doesn’t always have to be funny or moving or deep, sometimes it’s great because of its ingenuity or uniqueness. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is that kind of game. It’s a short puzzle platformer. It looks good and has a great soundtrack, but the real interesting part of this game is the fact that the player controls two characters simultaneously, one with each stick. It’s a difficult concept to grasp at first, but if you can handle basic multitasking it should be relatively simple to figure out. The trick, and something that I found very interesting, is that it was easier if I thought about the brothers as a single connected entity rather than two separate characters. When I moved them together like a single being with two appendages, puzzles became much simpler. I imagine this design is similar to how the original Ice Climbers worked (a game which I have never played). It’s something very interesting that was definitely worth a look. I can definitely say that this game was worth my time but I’m not sure how strongly I would recommend it. If you’re looking for a very different experience that is still fun, this is definitely worth a try. However, I don’t think I’d consider it worth more than $5 because of its brevity.
Brothers is a very short game. I managed to finish the entire story in around 3 hours. Granted, there were still little side events I could do for achievements, but if there were true choices in this game I couldn’t find them. Its brevity might give it a bit of replayability, but don’t expect this game to last too much longer than one or two playthroughs.
There were a few puzzles that were a bit difficult to figure out, but the only really challenging elements were the controls. It can be a bit difficult to grasp the idea of controlling two characters simultaneously. If you can get over that, you shouldn’t have much of a problem. But you definitely need a controller to play this game. 2. Parental Notices
Violence is mostly absent in this game but does become noticeable in a few sections. The brothers have to make their way through a recent battle ground where dead giants lie around. The carnage the giants wrought on each other is fairly obvious. In one part, the player will have to shoot a bolt from a crossbow into a dead giant’s forehead in order to make a path. The player almost never actually perpetrates violence in any way, the brothers just witness it along their journey. However, sometimes it can get a bit gross. Like when the brothers end up soaked in blood. The only time when the brothers actually committed an obvious act of violence was at the end of the game. They get attacked by a spider and have to pull its legs off in order to keep it from eating them. It’s a fairly gruesome process compared to the other content in the game.
Sexuality is not a factor in this game.
The story of this game involves two brothers trying to find a special medicine to save their dad. At the end of the game the dad gets the medicine he needs. One of the characters was designed to be the town drunk. He's only obviously drunk because of his mannerisms and movement. The brothers can look at him and ask him for help, but he does not play a pivotal role in the game.
Gambling is not a factor in this game. 3. Other Factors
There are no modding tools available for this game.
There are a few places were pagan religion comes into play (such as when a group of people are performing some sort of human sacrifice), but these are relatively rare occurrences.
Anti-law is not a factor in this game.
There are no multiplayer game modes for this game.
This game is a platforming game, so the brothers will have to climb some cliffs and other objects in potentially deadly situations. However, the only time when any serious extreme sports come into play is when the brothers cooperatively hang glide from the same glider. It was a bit ridiculous, but necessary for the game’s mechanics.
Ghosts and spirits come into play in the game’s story, but magic is pretty much absent from the entire game. Therefore, magic is not a factor in this game.
There are no additional factors in this game.
