The digital projection of The Greatest Generation. Everyone remembers the major battles like D-Day and Berlin, but what about the supporting battles that helped turn the tide? It's time to retake Tobruk, Stalingrad, and the Rhine. Welcome back to World War II.
1. Gameplay
Younger gamers may not remember the days when video games, especially shooters, included a health bar. These were sad times. The health bar was an element carried over from 16-bit games that had no place in the increasingly fast-paced world of the shooter genre. Players would fight for a few minutes and then be forced to carefully search for health in order to keep going. This often became a frustratingly frantic scramble that ultimately led to the player’s demise. Call of Duty 2 fixed that problem completely with a simple regenerating health system. This not only cleared up space on the HUD but also made the entire game much easier and more streamlined. This, as well as a number of other changes to the overall flow of the game, were greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, since Call of Duty 2 is a sequel that still centers on the European Theater of World War II, the developers had to find some way to include new battles but still keep things interesting. In the Russian and British campaigns this was done flawlessly. The retaking of Stalingrad was an excellent way to introduce the ferocity of the Soviets and the unfortunate position the Nazi troops were in. The British campaign to retake Tobruk and the large-scale tank battles in the deserts of North Africa were awesome and something that is often missed in tales of World War II. Unfortunately, the American campaign lacked the same fire. The player will have to scale the cliffs at Ponte Du Hoc on D-Day, but after that it quickly goes downhill. After capturing a few random villages and dealing with a Tiger tank that somehow manages to take out an entire American armored convoy single-handedly, the game ends with the Americans taking Hill 400 and then crossing the Rhine. This may have been a strategically vital point to the overall war effort, but it doesn’t feel like a conclusion. Still, this is definitely a game worth playing, especially for fans of the series.
2. Parental Notices
There are a few rare instances where friends or enemies can be seen lit on fire. There were only two cases where I saw this happening, however. Explosions will cause an enemy to fly into the air a short distance before collapsing on the ground in a heap. No gore is ever show.
The only obvious bottle of wine is seen after the British manage to capture Tobruk. Colonel Price holds wine bottles in both hands in order to celebrate the hard-fought victory.
3. Other Factors
There are also occasionally gravestones with crosses on them. However, these are relatively rare.
Other than this, extreme sports are not a factor in this game.
At the beginning of the game, the player will witness his Soviet commander interrogate a German prisoner of war. The commander will beat the PoW in order to get information on the Nazi troop positions.
