The power of imagination. It's Halloween and evil candy-stealing grubbins have stolen your sibling. Now it is up to you and your faithful companions to save your sibling, get the candy back, and save Halloween. 1. Gameplay
Normally we don’t review games that clearly lack mature content, but we found Costume Quest to be so much fun that we couldn’t pass it up. Costume Quest was developed by Double Fine Productions, a company known for developing very odd but kid-friendly titles. Costume Quest lives up to that same standard by offering very simple, easy gameplay packaged with a creative story. The player will start the game by selecting one of two twin siblings to play as. After this, the player must go on an adventure where the other sibling is kidnapped by monsters and the only way to fight these monsters is to use a variety of costumes to combat enemies. The gameplay is designed to be easy enough for any child to figure out, but it’s still pretty fun. Older gamers such as myself might find a bit of “nostalgia value”, since it reminds me a lot of the games that I used to play as a kid. The only downside is that the replay value for this game is almost non-existent. The player can go through and try to find all of the collectible items, but after this is accomplished there is little else to do. Still, it was definitely worth the playthrough and is a great game for a younger audience.
This game isn’t designed to be very long but there are two separate adventures that gamers can enjoy. The first is the original “Costume Quest” campaign that introduces all of the characters and their costumes. The second is called “Grubbins on Ice” and is a sort of epilogue. I completed the first in about 6 hours. Considering this game is relatively inexpensive and can be bought on sale during the right times, I’d consider the length to be worth the cost.
The exploration mode of Costume Quest features a fixed camera, meaning that the player will always be looking at the characters from a single bird’s eye view. Normally this isn’t a problem and the vast majority of the levels are set up to work with this camera, but there are some times when areas or items are hidden behind objects. If the angle could be changed this wouldn’t be a problem, but unfortunately certain trees, houses, or other tall objects obscured the player’s vision. However, the vast majority of the time this was not a problem. Even when it did occur, it would almost always just obscure an unimportant object such as a trash can or pile of leaves. Other than this, there was nothing frustrating about this game. 2. Parental Notices
Violence in this game is extremely mild. When combat does occur (which is less than half of the total length of this game), characters will use a turn-based system to attack each other with one of up to three different attacks. Each costume has a primary attack based on the costume. For example, the robot costume fires a laser, the space soldier swipes with a light sword, etc. After three attacks, players can use a special attack that is also based on their costume. For example, the robot costume will fire a barrage of missiles. When players are killed, they simply step back as if they had tapped out. When an enemy is killed, they explode into smoke and candy. Some attacks can leave characters on fire. Those on fire will take a small amount of fire damage at the beginning of their team’s turn.

Since it has been secularized and is only referred to in the “trick or treating” sense in this game, I do not consider Halloween to be a reference to any religion. Therefore, religion is not a factor in this game.
Anti-law is not a factor in this game.
There is no multiplayer game mode for this game.
In one section the characters have to shoot themselves out of a cannon to get to the top of a ferris wheel. While the player does see the characters get shot out of the cannon, they never see how they manage to land on and get down from the top of the ferris wheel. One of the costumes allows the player to use speed skates to jump small ramps. The player will have to do this a number of times throughout the game in order to progress. However, these cases are few and fairly mild.
Some enemies and player costumes will use magic for attack or defense. The player will run into a number of shamans and other magic-based characters who will use magical attacks to damage the player’s characters. The vast majority of the time the magical attack has an effect similar to a fireball. Sometimes the enemies will “buff” themselves or their allies by giving them a defensive shield or increasing their attack power. The player will also have some magical abilities. These will vary depending on the costume. One example is the vampire costume’s ability to conjure and send out bats that leech health from enemies and give it to allies.
There are no other factors involved in this game.
