Welcome to paradise. A seemingly deserted tropical island, a murderous mercenary force, and a top secret scientific project that could change humanity forever. Only one man has the chance to stop "evolution" in its tracks. NOTE: I would recommend getting this game on Steam. The Steam version is fully patched and compatible with Windows 7 x64-bit systems (some tweaking may be required, but it wasn't complicated).
1. Gameplay
And while the graphics may seem almost childish compared to what is out now, but that doesn’t diminish from the cleanliness of the game overall. Far Cry is still one of the better shooters to have ever been released and paved the way for many other titles that have become household names. The action is smooth, the environment provides a ton of freedom, and the stealth mechanics actually make a bit of sense. For those of you who don’t understand what any of that means, basically the way that the game is designed is nearly flawless. This is especially important with the stealth mechanics. The player has the opportunity to go a bit slower and use sound to distract enemies. Some weapons are louder than others and thus draw more attention from enemies. The player can use different means of distracting enemies and preventing them from learning his location. The silenced MP5 was critical in situations where the player was vastly outnumbered. Unfortunately there were some definite downsides to this game. While most of these are discussed in detail in the “Frustration Factor” section below, the most unfortunate downside by far was the absurd amount of damage that enemies could deal to the player. A single enemy is a serious threat to the player and must be treated as such. The player must not only consider each enemy as potentially deadly but also consider that every room could hide an enemy. Even with the frustration that this game sometimes handed out by the gallon, Far Cry is still entertaining and worth playing. It’s an excellent view into the history of first person shooters and how they have shaped the current video game landscape.
There is also a multiplayer mode for this game, but considering its age it is unlikely that anyone will want to get this game for the multiplayer. The multiplayer mode is discussed in more detail in the “online community” section below.
This was made even worse by the fact that certain enemies later in the game were completely invisible. They were designed to be barely visible as long as you stay still and are watching the correct spot, but without the player looking specifically for these invisible enemies in the perfect lighting conditions. They were extremely difficult to see. While health packs and armor weren’t rare, they were usually placed in spots between large amounts of action. So if I lost my health halfway through an action scenario, I was forced to either reload from a previous checkpoint or power through and hope for the best. This was only compounded in certain situations. Sometimes I would be stuck in a situation where there was no way to successfully stealth-kill my opponents. It was nearly impossible to cross certain bridges while under a hailstorm of fire from enemies. Even worse, there were scenarios later in the game when I would get caught between two opposing forces, both of which ended up firing straight at me. This is again compounded when enemies with rocket launchers are taken into account. There were a number of human and troglodyte enemies that were equipped with rocket launchers. While the rockets were absurdly slow and easy to dodge, it was only really possible to avoid damage if I was not standing in front of a wall or hill or some other solid object. If I was, the rocket would hit the object and instantly cause an absurd amount of damage. Trying to take care of rocket-equipped enemies was a serious chore. One boss battle halfway through the game was easily one of the most frustrating battles I have ever attempted. I was stuck on a sinking ship trying to blow up an enemy attack helicopter that seemed to have infinite health. In order to take down the one helicopter I had to use 14 rockets, 25 sniper rifle rounds, and about 500 assault rifle rounds all while I was trying to avoid getting shot by the side-mounted gatling gun. It was absurd. 2. Parental Notices
If an enemy is killed in front of a wall or another object, a red smear of blood will appear on that object. However, usually the smears seem unnatural considering their angle compared to that of the enemy. Sometimes a pool of blood would form under a dead enemy. However, I could not get this to happen consistently. There are also some instances where a good amount of blood can be found around a body that is supposed to have been mauled by the troglodytes. However, the blood is static and cannot be replicated by the player. It is only included to add to the overall atmosphere of the level. This was it for blood and gore. Melee weapons can be used against enemies (there is a machete), but it is completely illogical since there is usually a plethora of ammunition and weaponry around. Explosions will, at most, send an enemy flying. However, it is more likely that an explosion will simply cause an enemy to crumple to the floor.
It’s clearly meant to be a scenario that heightens the sexual tension, but in reality it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense with the environment. The main characters are being chased by a group of murderous mercenaries. Taking the time to bathe oneself in the middle of a jungle doesn’t seem to fit with the gravity of the situation. There are also a few sexually suggestive magazines and posters scattered throughout the game. These are relatively common in any structure that is owned by the mercenaries, but are fairly easy to overlook.
His female sidekick will also be injected with both, but she is the only one seen being injected with the antidote. However, the player’s antidote injection is implied since he is cured of his Hulk-like green skin problem.
3. Other Factors
However, as with any moddable game, there will be some mods with mature content. Since there happens to be a female character in the game, there are a few mods that reduce the amount of clothing she wears. One of the mods makes her completely topless, which seems rather dangerous in a combat scenario and inappropriate for a trek through the jungle, but maybe that’s just me.
There are a few situations where the player will be able to jump from high heights into a pool of water. There are two examples where the player is required to do this. The first occurs when the player has to jump off of the deck of a scuttled aircraft carrier to get to a small dinghy in the ocean below. The second is when the player must jump off a cliff to land in a pool of water at the bottom of a waterfall. There are two instances where the player is forced out of a moving helicopter. In the first instance, the player is pushed out of the helicopter by his female sidekick and, after a significant fall, lands unharmed in the ocean below. In the second instance, the player is kicked out of the helicopter by the main antagonist. While the helicopter seems to be flying at a low altitude, the player bounces off the hard ground completely unharmed. There are also a few instances where the player can use hang gliders to move quickly and quietly across large distances. However, there are very few locations where the player can successfully use these gliders.
In the story the player eventually finds out that a mad scientist is trying to develop the “next stage of human evolution”. In doing so, he has created some sort of green troglodyte creature. The size and shape of the creatures vary, but it is presumed that the creatures are created from a variety of animals including humans. While this may simply be speculation (I could never get clear confirmation that troglodytes were previously human), the “human disfigurement” aspect comes into clear play when the player, his female sidekick, and the main antagonist are all injected with the troglodyte serum. The player and female sidekick both turn a sickly green. The main antagonist, on the other hand, somehow develops huge muscles and some weird red muscular tissue on his chest.
