Don't get between an angry woman and her gun. Ruby is a mercenary hired to track down the son of a famous smuggler. Unfortunately, things don't go quite as she expected. The solution? Kill everyone involved until she gets answers.
1. Gameplay
Wet had its ups and downs. The acrobatic slow-motion movie style element of it was pretty fun but definitely repetitive. The game encouraged you to do different acrobatic tricks (rather than repeating the same tricks in a row), but it usually came down to a very basic formula. Slide for 50 feet on your knees, then jump up into the air for another 30. All in slow motion, all while shooting everyone in sight. The rooms usually had other things you could do like swinging off poles or running up walls, but the basic acrobatics always included some element of jumping or sliding. The storyline was decent but I felt like it had some holes. I usually understood who I was chasing, but the locations were somewhat bland. The rooms were almost always two-stories separated by corridors. The corridors seemed to have cover, but it was only useable by enemies since you were supposed to be jumping up and around everything. It was easy to overlook provided you accepted that this was supposed to be completely unrealistic. The simplicity of the game was a good element. You don’t have to worry about throwing grenades or reloading your weapons. The only things you’re concerned about are which weapons you pick, what acrobatic moves you’re pulling off, and who you’re shooting at. That’s it throughout pretty much the entire game with few exceptions. Those few exceptions though really make this game interesting. There’s one scene where you’re jumping on cars going on a freeway while people are shooting at you (and you’re shooting back). It’s difficult, but fun to try and survive. The other scene involves you free-falling out of a destroyed airplane. You have to avoid wreckage and shoot guys who are also falling and shooting you at the same time. Provided you survive, you grab the only parachute in the entire plane and escape. The ending to this game was extremely disappointing. Usually games have some sort of climactic final battle that’s different than the previous battles in the game. It’s supposed to be that final release so the player can feel like they accomplished something and that the antagonists got what they deserved. This game didn’t have that. It ends with a brief interactive cutscene battle and that’s it. I was expecting a huge all-out brawl between me and the remaining forces, but it didn’t even include that. It really seemed like the development team just ran out of time and had to quickly fill in an ending. Overall the game was simple and fun, but definitely had room for improvement.
There are also some challenges that take place in Ruby’s “boneyard”, which is basically an airplane graveyard. Those should take players some time to finish. They were challenging, but I didn’t find them impossible. The problem is that the replay value for this game is very, very small. There are a few interesting game modes that unlock once you’ve beaten the game. For example, the “golden bullets” mode makes each bullet a one-shot-kill, but health is much more difficult to recover. However, the storyline never changes and neither does the overall gameplay. You’re still jumping around like an acrobat shooting people with the same weapons as before. Maybe if this game had included some different weapons for the higher difficulty levels I would have attempted to replay it on a higher difficulty level. However, with the only incentive being achievements, I only replayed part of this game.
The only thing I thought was frustrating was that sometimes the game mechanics were counterintuitive. Like for instance, the game has ledges that you can grab onto and run around. However, the only way to actually attach to these walls was to literally run up the wall. This wouldn’t have been an issue except that if you jumped up to the ledge instead you would not grab hold, even if you were clearly within reaching distance of the ledge. You had to wall run up it to grab hold. It wasn’t a huge deal, but it could be frustrating if you were trying to keep your multiplier going. 2. Parental Notices
There are two exceptions that break this cycle. The first is when Ruby “sees red”. A short cutscene will play where she shoots a charging enemy and the enemy’s blood splatters on her face. This sends her into a blind rage where the entire screen turns red, black, and white. Enemies are still visible but only really as outlines, and when they die (usually with an abundance of white-colored blood) they will sort of fade into ribbons. The second is much more violent. Certain enemies are particularly difficult to kill. They’re usually powerful in some way, leading the rest of the minions in the battle against Ruby. When these enemies have taken enough damage, Ruby will have to perform a cinematic execution on them. Frequently this involved jumping over the boss, landing in front of him, and then using her sword to stab him in the crotch. It was gross and definitely made me cringe.
There was also a scene where Ruby was stripped to her underwear and chained up to be tortured. Toward the end of the scene, the main antagonist tells the torturer that once the process is done the torturer can do whatever he wants with her. I took it to imply something sexual, but it’s never actually stated.
Additionally, the entire plot centers around drug traffickers and trading. Ruby is unwittingly hired to take out an entire drug cartel for a rival cartel. She’ll find herself going through some environments that could loosely be tied to the drug trade (there was definitely one big room with a lot of leafy plants in it), but if the storyline never mentioned the drugs it wouldn’t be obvious. There is one scene where Ruby gets drugged by what is supposed to be an ally (but obviously isn’t to anyone who has seen one or two action movies). The guy sticks a needle in Ruby that knocks her out.
3. Other Factors
Normally I don’t mention the language in a game. There are very few circumstances where the language has been so obviously foul that it’s been distracting. Wet definitely touches that line at the very least though. Ruby is a foul-mouthed, violent woman who is definitely frustrated by something. Everything she does seems to have some sort of expletive tied to it. Every time she get shot she swears, every time she shoots someone she swears, every time someone else gets shot they swear. I couldn’t possibly even try to count the number of expletives that this game threw at me. Torture
As I mentioned before in “Sexuality”, there is a scene where Ruby is tortured. She is chained up to the ceiling with her feet in a bathtub full of water. The torturer electrocutes her to try and extract information. It’s not a very nice scene (and I never really thought it was necessary), but it’s not very graphic either.
